Poland transfers MiG fighters to US as Ukraine asks for help

Poland has reached an agreement with the United States to transfer “immediately and free of charge” all of its Russian-made MiG-29 fighter jets to a US airbase in Germany, a likely precursor to planes delivered to Ukraine.

Tuesday’s announcement came after a week of back and forth negotiations over the transfer, and amid Russian warnings that delivering the jets to Ukraine would be seen as a provocation.

In a statement, the Polish Foreign Ministry said that Warsaw “requests the United States to provide us with used aircraft with corresponding operational capabilities.” Poland is ready to immediately establish the conditions for the purchase of aircraft.
