Shane MacGowan, frontman of Irish punk-folk band The Pogues, has died of pneumonia, his wife has revealed.

The “New York Fairy Tale” songwriter died at 3 a.m. Thursday with his wife and family by his side. He was 65 years old.

The musician’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, told the New York Times that her husband also suffered from devastating brain swelling.

MacGowan, who would have been 66 on Christmas Day, was released from hospital last week.

Clarke confirmed her husband’s death on Thursday, saying the beloved singer “will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams and the love of my life.”

“I don’t know how to say this, so I’m just going to say it,” she wrote on Instagram.

“There is no way to describe the loss I feel and the longing for one more of his smiles that lit up my world,” she said of “the love of my life, of the most beautiful soul and the most beautiful angel”.

He received treatment in December 2022 for viral encephalitis – an enlarged brain – and spent more time in the intensive care unit over the summer.

MacGowan, who had been in a wheelchair since 2015, was back in the hospital last month for an unknown illness.

Clarke shared a photo of MacGowan in hospital as she spoke about her “terrifying fear of loss”.

“Love is the most beautiful and powerful thing we can experience as human beings, but love can also be painful, especially if you are afraid of losing someone or something you love” , she wrote in part.

“Sometimes when you love very deeply, you find yourself faced with terrifying fears of loss that can seem so great and devastating that you don’t know how to survive them and you can’t imagine life without that person you love.”

MacGowan was released from the hospital and the couple celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary together at home.

Besides Clarke, MacGowan is survived by his sister, Siobhan; and his father, Maurice.
