Plurality says another Democrat should take Pelosi’s place as speaker

A plurality of Americans believe that another Democrat should take the place of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as chair, a Economist/ YouGov poll released this week found.

The survey asked those interviewed, “Do you think Nancy Pelosi should stay at the top of the Democrats in the US House of Representatives or do you think it should be another Democrat?” “

A strong plurality, 47%, expressed the view that “another Democrat” should take their place. Eighteen percent said they still weren’t sure and 15 percent “don’t care”. Only 20%, in total, said Pelosi should remain the leader of the Democrats in the House.

These ratings are not surprising, given that only 36% approve of Pelosi’s work as president. Among these, only 18% approve “strongly” against 49% who disapprove. Of these, 40% “strongly” disapprove.

When asked what they prefer in terms of the outcome of this year’s congressional election for the United States House of Representatives, Americans remain practically divided, with 36% saying they prefer a “Democrat-controlled” house. And 35% said they preferred a “Democratic-controlled” House. by Republicans. That’s well within the survey’s +/- 2.8 percent margin of error.

The survey was conducted from January 8 to January 1, 2022, among 1,500 adult US citizens.

Despite harsh criticism from the US electorate, Pelosi believes House Democrats are in “good shape” heading into the midterm elections and believes Democrats will retain a majority in the lower house. That confidence comes despite the fact that 26 Democrats have already announced their intention to leave the House after their current term.

“It means they get on with their lives. And it’s a very personal decision, but it’s okay. We’re fine, ”Pelosi, who herself faces retirement rumors, told Punchbowl News. “We are very confident about the seats for people who are leaving. “
