‘Plane Swap’ on Hulu: Members of the Red Bull Air Force will attempt to parachute into free-falling unmanned planes

This weekend, the world will witness an unprecedented aerial performance involving two pilots, two planes – and no one at the controls.

Red Bull Air Force members Luke Aikins and Andy Farrington will make history with the world’s first show, Plane Swap, as each will fly a plane solo, put them in a vertical dive, jump (leaving them empty) and parachute into each other’s planes.

The event will air live for three hours exclusively on Hulu in the United States starting at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT on Sunday, April 24.

Cousins and skydiving pros Aikins and Farrington will tackle the feat in two Cessna 182 single-seat planes, which they will fly to an altitude of 14,000 feet over Arizona. Once the planes are launched into a synchronized dive, the pilots shut down the engines and exit their plane as they dive at a speed of 140 mph towards the ground. The duo will then parachute into each other’s planes, enter the cockpits, disengage the braking system, restart the engines, and regain control.

Teammates are no strangers to death-defying stunts: Aikins, who conceptualized the “Plane Swap,” performed a first-ever skydive without a parachute on live TV in 2016, and Farrington himself has more than 27 000 paratroopers.

“Plane Swap is the natural progression and culmination of my professional work, both in the air as a pilot and skydiver and on the ground as an innovator,” Aikins said. “This is the pinnacle of my career and my goal is to inspire the world and show that anything is possible. You can focus on something that sometimes seems wild, crazy and unreachable, but through ambition and creativity, you can do it.”

Hours of research and development will make this incredible feat possible. Aikins and Farrington teamed up with Dr. Paulo Iscold, a world-renowned aeronautical engineer, to develop a special system of airbrakes and other modifications to hold aircraft in a controlled vertical descent that closely matches the skydiver’s free-fall speeds. .

And despite hours of training, uncontrollable factors remain, such as Sunday’s wind speed and the density of the natural environment.

“We’ve taken a lot of aeronautical ‘NO’s, and here we are, ready to attempt the unimaginable after rigorous preparation,” Aikins said. “When we attempt this, it will be one of those cool moments for me knowing that we have overcome all the obstacles.”

“Plane Swap” is the latest in a series of live news and sports coverage, events and programs that have been made available to Hulu subscribers on demand, including Lollapalooza 2021, 75 exclusive matches from the NHL and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve with Ryan Seacrest.

The Walt Disney Co. is the parent company of Hulu and this ABC station.
