Plane passenger opens emergency door instead of bathroom

A first-time air traveller sparked chaos after accidentally opening the plane’s emergency exit door while looking for the toilet.

The incident occurred as Air China Flight 2754 waited on the tarmac at Quzhou airport in eastern Zhejiang province on Thursday evening, the South China Morning Post reported.

The rookie pilot had gone to the rear of the plane and ripped the door off without anyone noticing, causing the evacuation slide to deploy.

The error occurred when the passenger was looking for the toilet on board Air China Flight 2754 last week.

“When the evacuation slide came out, even the flight attendants were surprised,” said one passenger, identified only as Cheng.

A photo circulating on Chinese social media shows the plane parked in the middle of the tarmac with the slide in place.

The plane had to be emptied of passengers and the flight was eventually cancelled.

“The passenger was in tears when she heard she would have to pay damages,” said Cheng, her travel companion.

The cost of activating the plane’s emergency door is approximately $28,000, the outlet reported.

The woman responsible for the problem was questioned by police shortly after the incident. Her identity was not revealed in the report.

This sparked concern online, with some wondering if it was a worrying “design flaw” for the passenger to have opened the exit so easily without knowing.
