Pizza delivery driver dies in ‘freak accident’ on customer porch

CONNERSVILLE, Indiana (WXIN) – A pizza delivery driver in Indiana tragically died on Saturday after a porch collapsed under him at a customer’s home.

William Fields, 45, of Connersville, was making a delivery for Pizza King around 11:30 p.m. when the delivery recipient’s porch collapsed and Fields was trapped under concrete and debris, police said. First responders arrived to find Fields standing still. He was later pronounced dead in a hospital.

Friend and colleague Kimberly Patterson, who worked with Fields at Pizza King for almost 30 years, said she was shocked to learn of her death.

“Just amazing,” Patterson said. “It was truly a freak accident.”

Co-worker Heather York said employees and customers were “just devastated” by the tragedy.

“You just don’t think something like that would happen, but you never know it,” York said. “I personally know people he would deliver to and he just walked in and put their pizza on their stove.”

Friends also remembered Fields as a beloved member of the community.

“Bill was very much loved,” said Fields’ childhood friend Tonya Case. “He would give his shirt off his back for anyone.” … Everyone loved Bill. He just had a very good heart. He was nice.”

Colleagues told WXIN that Fields leaves behind a 13-year-old daughter. The restaurant placed a donation bucket at the counter to help raise money for her family, as well as funeral expenses. Customers wishing to donate can also call Pizza King’s Connersville location. All money raised will go to Fields’ family, employees said.

A donation bucket sits at the counter of a Pizza King in Connersville to help pay for the funeral expenses of delivery driver Billy Fields. Fields was killed when a porch collapsed while delivering pizza.

Connersville Police, meanwhile, said their investigation concluded the collapse was an accident and no criminal investigation was underway.
