Former NFL star Phillip Adams took his own life after killing five people, including a prominent doctor, his wife and their two grandchildren, police said.

Police have yet to establish the motive for the mass shooting in South Carolina on Wednesday.

“There is nothing right now that doesn’t make sense to any of us,” York County Sheriff Kevil Tolson said during a media briefing.

Dr Robert Lesslie, 70, and his wife, Barbara, 69, were pronounced dead at the scene along with their grandchildren, Adah Lesslie, nine, and Noah Lesslie, five, the coroner’s office said. York County.

James Lewis, 38, of Gaston, was working on the property and was found shot dead outside, while an unidentified sixth person was taken to hospital with “serious gunshot wounds”.

After police discovered the five victims, they said evidence left at the scene led them to the home of Adams’ parents.

There, they led his parents to safety before trying to talk outside the former San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots player.

Eventually, Sheriff Tolson said, they found him dead from a single gunshot wound to the head in a bedroom.

According to the Associated Press news agency, Adams had been treated by Dr Lesslie, who lived near his parents’ house in the town of Rock Hill.

Adams’ father told a television station in Charlotte, South Carolina, that he blamed football for the problems his son was having, which could have led him to commit the violence on Wednesday.

He told WCNC-TV: “I can tell he’s a good kid – he was a good kid, and I think football ruined him. He didn’t talk much and he didn’t bother anyone.”

Adams, 33, played 78 NFL games in five seasons for six teams.

He joined the 49ers in 2010 and although he rarely started, he continued to play for New England, Seattle, Oakland and the New York Jets before ending his career with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015.

As a rookie at the end of the 2010 season, Adams suffered a serious ankle injury that required surgery that included several screws inserted into his leg.

He never played for the 49ers again, stepping out just before the start of the 2011 season.

Later, with the then Oakland Raiders, he suffered two concussions in three games in 2012. It is not known whether he sustained long-lasting concussion-related injuries.

An NFL spokesperson said: “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims of this devastating tragedy.”
