At 2:16 p.m. on trade deadline day, the Phillies made just one move: acquire the infielder Edmundo Sosa. But there’s still smoke in the air with the Phillies reportedly looking for a starting pitcher and center back. A notable move was made by the Phillies on Tuesday afternoon, which could be the precursor to another move.
Eflin’s knee was still bothering him in last gear, and there was no clear end to his comeback in sight.
As Gelb notes, that means Eflin likely won’t launch most of August. However, the move gives the Phillies an extra spot on their 40-man roster.
The Phillies used that 40-man spot claim the launcher Andre Vasquez of the Toronto Blue Jays. Vasquez is a left-handed reliever who appeared in nine games for the Blue Jays in 2022. He appeared in 21 major league games in four seasons from 2018-2022, minus 2020 when he didn’t pitch.
The Phillies are reportedly actively looking for a replacement for Eflin.
