Philadelphia reinstates indoor mask mandate after reporting sharp rise in coronavirus infections
Philadelphia is the first major US city to start requiring masks again since cases declined earlier this year.
The city is reporting more than 140 cases a day, a fraction of what it saw at the height of the omicron surge, and hospitalizations remain low. But Bettigole said the recent rise in infections indicates the city could be at the start of a new wave, and city officials are looking to stay ahead of the game by mandating indoor masking.
Health inspectors will begin enforcing the mask mandate at businesses across the city starting April 18.
