Phil Thompson thinks ‘power of Anfield’ will help deliver historic quadruple for Liverpool and hails Jurgen Klopp’s connection to the city

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson believes the ‘power of Anfield’ can help the club cross the line in search of a historic treble.

The Reds have already won the Carabao Cup and are in contention for the three remaining trophies for this unprecedented feat.

They face Villarreal at Anfield in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night, having already booked their place in the FA Cup final.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are one point behind Premier League leaders Manchester City with five games remaining with the title race set to come to a close.

Thompson himself was part of some iconic Liverpool teams, winning seven league titles, three European Cups, three League Cups, two UEFA Cups and an FA Cup.

While current Reds players insist they are not talking about the treble, the Kop hero believes there will be talk behind the scenes.

“It’s tough, you have to watch every game,” Thompson told White and Jordan on talkSPORT.

“I experienced a similar thing in 2001 with Gerard Houllier winning all three cups – the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and Worthington Cup.

“You have to try, as a staff, to get the players to just look at the next game and try to block things out.

“Everyone talks ‘which one would you accept, lose a cup and which one would you choose?’

“There you go, if you take it one at a time, it will happen. You have to discuss it and say “look, there is this possibility”.

“I think it will be extremely difficult to win all four, it has never been done before for the simple reason that it is so difficult.

“If there’s one club that could do it, thanks to the power of Anfield, it could be Liverpool Football Club.

“With the power of the fans, with the power of the players, the team they have at the moment, the way Klopp has the connection with the club. Liverpool are the team that could do that.

Thompson also reserved particular praise for Klopp and the club’s recruitment in recent years which has transformed them, once again, into a powerhouse in English football.

The former Reds defender and ex-manager insisted it’s no coincidence that Liverpool have enjoyed huge success recently.

“Klopp is getting Liverpool, the city and the people in a massive way,” Thommo added. “To be successful, you have to have that and that connection with people. That works.

“But it also depends on the players. You won’t get anywhere if you don’t have good players. In the past we had 16 or 17 good players, not as good a team as Man City, but all of a sudden they had this wonderful recruitment program.

“They looked for the right people to enter the football club. When I look at our bench, I go ‘wow’.

“It has been accentuated in these last four or five games when Klopp made changes like in the semi-final against Man City.

“You turn around and look at the bench and think, ‘I have so many options to choose from’. Which helps.

“It didn’t happen by accident. They’ve had great recruiting and other clubs should be watching City and Liverpool and how they’re doing it, the way they’re doing it.

“It’s not easy, it takes years to develop. Liverpool have done that better than most in recent years.

“That’s why the impossible is possible with the current setup.”
