Joohyung Kim notched seven birdies in a six-under 64 to take a three-way lead at the Wyndham Championship – where England’s Tyrrell Hatton is just four strokes off the pace.

South Korean player Kim is alongside Americans Ryan Moore and Brandon Wu at nine under – a position he could only have dreamed of after starting his first round on Thursday with a quadruple bogey eight.

Kim has amassed 14 birdies and just one bogey in 35 holes since that horror start, with the 20-year-old making gains on three of his last four holes at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro on Friday.

Kim, who drained a 14-foot par putt on her last hole in round two, must win the Wyndham Championship to qualify for the FedEx Cup play-offs because her official PGA Tour membership won’t begin until next season.

He said: “If you had told me after the first hole yesterday where I would be after two days I would definitely have taken it. I’m pretty happy and pretty relaxed knowing I have the weekend to play .”

Hatton is five under after shooting four birdies and a bogey on his second round 67 – play was stopped due to the threat of lightning with Hatton through 17 holes and he parried the last on the restart.

Play was halted again due to darkness later that evening, meaning not all players completed their second round.

Tyrrell Hatton has won one PGA Tour title in his career so far, the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March 2020

Moore and Wu landed rounds of 66 and 67 respectively, with this pair and Kim one stroke ahead of Sungaje Im, Russell Henley and first-round leader John Huh, who are eight under.

Huh shot his lowest round on the PGA Tour on day one, a nine-under 61, but made a 71 a day later, a display that included a bogey on his first hole, a double bogey on his fourth and a triple bogey on his 10th.

The 32-year-old has birdied five around his blemishes, however, and remains well in contention for his first PGA Tour victory in a decade, with the 2012 Mayakoba Classic his only title to date.

Watch day three of the Wyndham Championship live on Sky Sports on Saturday. Coverage begins via the red button from 12.45pm before the action continues on Sky Sports Mix at 6pm and Sky Sports Golf at 8pm.
