2022 PGA Championship: The Course

Designed by Perry Maxwell in the 1930s, Southern Hills will play at a par 71 and be 7,481 yards in length.

It was restored by Gil Hanse in 2019 to its current condition and now reflects Maxwell’s original vision.

The 7th is one of the most difficult holes on the course while the 12th is considered one of the best par 4s in golf.

The 2007 PGA Championship was held at Southern Hills and played shorter than this year at 7,131 yards.

Woods won it with a score of -8 ahead of Woody Austin while only five players finished under par.

PGA Championship 2022: What was said?

McIlroy hopes a relaxed approach and some online homework will pay off as he seeks a third PGA Championship title in Tulsa.

“Yesterday [Monday] It was the first time I saw the golf course. I really liked it,” McIlroy said.

“I didn’t know what this place was like until Gil got my hands on it, but I think he’s done an amazing job with it. I love the green resorts. I like that he gives you options on the tee.

“I think you’re going to see a lot of different strategies this week, guys hitting drivers where maybe other guys aren’t and vice versa. It’s a really good track. I really liked it play it and I think it’s going to be a wonderful test this week.

“The fried egg [twitter account] I did a little video with Gil that they sent over there, so I watched that. Then I think Golf Digest did some flybys of the golf course and I tried to dig up some footage from last year’s Senior PGA Championship, but that was pretty limited.

“I won a few major championships where I played nine holes on Tuesday, nine holes on Wednesday and I kind of managed to play and I played very well. Sometimes not knowing what the problem is, the ignorance is bliss in some ways.

“For me, I will prioritize the execution rather than the preparation every day. If you execute the shots and hit the ball well and the ball goes where you look, that’s more than half the battle.

PGA Championship 2022: Will Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson play?

Woods looks almost certain to play in the PGA Championship and says “everything is better” when it comes to his fitness.

Although Woods impressed at the Masters, he was clearly feeling the strain from his injuries and was unsure if he would be able to compete.

But he said earlier this week: “I’ve gotten a lot stronger since the Masters.

“We returned to work on Tuesday [after the Masters]. Monday was horrible, I did nothing and Tuesday was leg day. So we came back right after. Everything is going better.

His caddie Joe LaCava added: “I think the stamina is there now. I don’t think he tires that quickly.

“Besides the fact that he won here 15 years ago, I think it’s the stamina and the stamina that excites him the most.”

However, Woods’ longtime rival Mickelson will not be defending his PGA Championship title, tournament organizers have announced.

Mickelson has taken a break from golf since the fallout from his explosive comments on the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed breakaway led by Greg Norman.

“Phil is the reigning champion and currently eligible for PGA Life Membership and we would have welcomed him to participate. We wish Phil and Amy (his wife) the best and look forward to his return to golf.

Meanwhile, Paul Casey withdrew from the Championship due to a lingering back injury.

The 44-year-old has not competed since injury forced him out of WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in March after completing just two holes of his opening match.

Casey finished second behind Collin Morikawa at the 2020 PGA of America at Harding Park and also finished fourth behind Phil Mickelson at Kiawah Island last year.

His place on the pitch at Southern Hills will be taken by Scotsman Russell Knox. The second major championship of the year begins Thursday in Tulsa.
