PGA 2022: Byron Nelson Classic betting overview

It’s the week before the PGA Championship and big events always influence the field before and after, for better or worse depending on how you see it.

This week, most are expecting low scores as the course gives golfers plenty of ground to work on and helps boost their confidence.

Scottie Scheffler is playing his first event since winning the Masters last month (apart from the Zurich Classic alternate shot format in New Orleans). The highest ranked golfer in the world is running right now. He has won his last two tournaments, three of his last four and four of his last six. That’s about as in form as it gets.

Justin Thomas has the second best odds but he is yet to win an event in 2022 and his best finish was third at Valspar.

Fewer than half of the top 10 in the World Golf Rankings are playing this week in Dallas, a city that has the rare distinction of hosting two PGA events during the season.

Bets to consider

Dustin Johnson Top 5 (+400)

It’s obviously not as great a reward as if he puts everything together and wins the event, which he’s more than capable of, but it does give us some breathing room with one of the best players in the world and +400 for a catch. four days isn’t too bad. He’s 11th in the standings, so even though his last PGA win was over two years ago (Masters 2020), he’s still playing pretty good golf.

Joaquin Niemann +2200

I’ve seen odds on Niemann above +3000, so shop around for the best price. It should be great on a course where you don’t need to be so precise with your first and second shots. There are going to be low scores and he has already proven he knows how to win an event, winning the Genesis earlier this season.

Will Zalatoris +2200

He’s in the same range as Niemann and has been close a few times in 2022 with four top 6s. The only thing that gives me pause is that he wasn’t very good at this course last year, finishing 17th.

Sam Burns +1800

Burns finished second last year, just a few strokes off the lead, so we know he can perform on this course. He won the Valspar two years in a row, showing that when he is good on a course he can repeat that performance, which is definitely worth it.

Scottie Scheffler Top 5 (+270)

It’s hard to pick an outright winner of a golf tournament, so even when there’s a solid favorite, you get odds of +700 or better. Scheffler is in great shape and has been all season. He has finished in the top 5 in five of his last 14 events. There’s basically no reason not to take this bet other than he hasn’t been great at this course in the past.
