‘Peril!’ Champion Christine Whelchel ditches the wig in her last appearance ‘to normalize what healing from cancer looks like’

On Monday’s episode of Peril!Four-Day Champion Christine Whelchel has made a powerful statement about normalizing what recovering from cancer looks like on screen.

During the “meet the contestants” portion of the quiz show, host Ken Jennings pointed out that the piano teacher from Tennessee sported a slightly different look. Whelchel, who previously wore longer blonde hair, appeared in the latest episode with much shorter hair. As she explained, she wore a wig to cover her haircut while undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

“I decided I didn’t need to hide behind a wig anymore,” she told Jennings. “I want to normalize what healing from cancer looks like.”

“Well, you look fabulous,” Jennings replied.

Whelchel also shared the exciting news that she is now in remission after undergoing recent surgery. “Everything went well and I am now cancer free,” she added.

In his first appearance on the show, Whelchel memorably addressed a rare tiebreaker issue at the end of the first game. The category was “Flowers”, with the following clue: “After its inclusion in a 1915 poem, this red flower became a symbol of fallen soldiers in World War I.”

Whelchel correctly answered: “Poppy”.

The contestant is still going strong on the quiz show, recording her fourth win during Monday’s episode. She added $14,001 to her earnings for a total of $73,602. Congratulations!
