In our highly mobile society, the plane is arguably the fastest way to get to your destination, but it is poorly equipped for millions of people with disabilities, especially in wheelchairs.
Air transport is a failing system that needs attention, as illustrated by the recent death of disability rights activist Engracia Figueroa. Figueroa’s reckless mistreatment at the hands of an airline is not an isolated event – although it is among the most egregious. Figueroa died after an airline broke her custom-made wheelchair. She spent weeks in a loaner chair causing a pressure ulcer which led to her death.
