Pelosi calls on private companies to provide travel for abortions

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said on CNN’s ‘State of the Union’ on Sunday that ‘of course’ private companies should cover travel expenses for their employees to get abortions in a state where it is legal if Roe vs. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court.

Partial transcript as follows:

ANCHOR DANA BASH: What can you do to help women who will seek abortions but live in states where it is prohibited. For example, would you encourage private companies to offer abortion travel as a health benefit?

PELOSI: Well, sure, that, but the point is that we, as a country – it’s – put that in perspective. What we want women, families and everyone else to focus on is the nature of this decision. It’s — our country, the genius of our founders was to have a Constitution that allowed freedom to flourish. And he did it with marriage equality, he did it with Roe v. Wade, in many ways, more fully defining freedom.

This is the first time that the court has taken back a freedom defined by case law and respect for privacy. So let’s stay focused on who we are as a country and not become something where we have to depend on privacy. I think everything is fine. It is useful for women, and it is important. But it’s also important to know that it’s not right. This is not the path to freedom for our country. So they put freedom on the ballot. And our democracy was on the ballot because of what they did in the election.

But it’s a place where freedom and American family kitchen table issues come together. What decisions does a family make? What about contraception for young people? It’s just beyond a particular situation. It’s enormous, in terms of contraception, in vitro fertilization, once again, the woman’s right to decide. And that’s okay — we want to mitigate the damage, but we have to get rid of the damage.
