Patrick Vieira challenges Crystal Palace to break club’s Premier League goalscoring record ahead of Liverpool trip

The Eagles came close to last campaign, equaling their second-best tally of 50 in the 2016/17 season, just around their best Premier League tally of 51 in 2018/19.

Wilfried Zaha has scored 14 of those goals in 2021/22, while Conor Gallagher, now back at Chelsea after his loan spell in south London, has contributed eight.

“There is no pressure,” Vieira said. “We scored those goals pretty well. We have good players who can create something in the last 30 yards.

“But scoring goals depends on how you play. I still believe that to create chances and score goals, you have to play well from the back and make the right decision.

“We want to score more goals than last year, and to do that we have to play better football.”

Palace’s difficult start to the season began with a 2-0 home defeat to Arsenal and the schedule won’t be any lighter with Liverpool at Anfield and a trip to holders Manchester City later this month.

The Eagles were just one goal ahead of Arsenal late in the Premier League curtain-raiser, Gabriel Martinelli netting a well-crafted free-kick, until Marc Guehi’s 85th-minute own goal put all hope of sharing the spoils out of reach.

“It doesn’t please me at all that in the first game of the season we conceded the goal from a set piece,” admitted Vieira.

“I think we were a bit sloppy in this situation, with the way we defended. We talked about it and I expect us to be much better at defending set pieces. It’s something we’ve been working on since last year.”

Guehi will look to improve on his unfortunate night at Selhurst Park, where Bukayo Saka’s cross deflected off his header and past Palace keeper Vicente Guaita.

Jurgen Klopp is also hoping to see a better performance from his entire squad after their opener at Fulham ended in a 2-2 draw.

Still, Guehi believes, this score line shouldn’t give Palace an extra boost.

“I don’t think there’s really a good time to play at Liverpool,” he told Palace TV. “Everyone knows how strong they are as a team, they have fantastic players, obviously after a good season they’ve had so it’s going to be a tough game.

“We expect that and hope we can put in a good performance.”
