Russian and Belarusian athletes will no longer be allowed to participate in the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has reversed its decision to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete in the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, just a day after saying they could appear neutral.
The Games officially begin on Friday, but the IPC said the “viability” of the event had been compromised by several teams, athletes and National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) threatening to boycott if athletes from Russia and Belarus were free to compete.
“[The] the situation in the athletes’ villages is getting worse and ensuring the safety of the athletes has become untenable”, the IPC said in its statement announcing the decision.
