Ottawa Police Step Up Efforts to Clear Freedom Convoy Encampment

OTTAWA — Police pushed Saturday into a central encampment of protesters whose vehicles paralyzed the capital’s downtown core for more than three weeks, in a bid to extricate those who remained entrenched in the area after another advance police led to more than 100 arrests on Friday.

The prolonged protest against Covid-19 vaccination mandates on the streets of downtown Ottawa, which also inspired blockades at some border crossings between the United States and Canada, is now being greeted by hundreds of police from all over the country, some on horseback and others carrying batons and shields. Some officers carried firearms.
