The 2022 Oscars are shaping up to be an exciting spectacle. Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall are in final negotiations to host the 2022 Academy Awards.
According to Variety, the three comedic forces are finalizing details to host this year’s Oscars. Three hosts haven’t taken on Oscar duties in 35 years.
The three stars appear to be the sole hosts of the awards show, despite several storylines that the broadcast creatives have discussed. Producer Will Packer has been in meetings for weeks trying to come up with the right recipe for Hollywood’s biggest night.
The scripts Packer had toyed with included a three-act structure, which would feature a different pair of hosts every hour. A long list of top talent has met with Packer in recent weeks, including Mad Men star Jon Hamm, who left the talks over the weekend, sources say.
The hosts will be officially announced on ABC’s morning news show Good Morning America shortly. On Sunday, Schumer posted a lengthy Instagram slideshow with some of his biggest career highlights, with the ominous caption “Big fun news is coming.”
If final negotiations go as planned, each emcee will host one hour of the show. This is the first time in three years that the Oscars will have a host. Jimmy Kimmel last hosted the ceremony in 2018 and 2017.
Other hosts of the past decade include Chris Rock, Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres, Seth MacFarlane, Billy Crystal and the dual partnership of James Franco and Anne Hathaway.
In 2018, Kevin Hart was announced as the host of the 2019 Oscars, but the comedian-actor stepped down from his role after the organization hosting the event, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, told him asked to apologize for past homophobic tweets. by Hart.
“I have made the choice to step back from hosting this year’s Oscars…it’s because I don’t want to be a distraction on an evening that should be celebrated by so many talented artists and unbelievable. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words about my past,” Hart tweeted in December 2018.
“I’m sorry for hurting people. I’m growing and I want to continue to do so. My goal is to bring people together, not to separate us. Lots of love and appreciation for the Academy. I hope we can see each other again.” he added at the time.
Interest in hosting the Oscars is still strong in Hollywood circles. Tom Holland expressed interest in December, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he would say yes to hosting the 2022 show if approached.
Reports of who could host this year’s Oscars have been circulating for weeks, with names such as Pete Davidson and Jon Hamm in the running. At one point, rumors surfaced that the producers were considering a trio consisting of the “Only Murders in the Building” cast: Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin.
The Academy announced this year’s nominees earlier this month. The Power of the Dog led the pack with 12 nominations overall, followed by Dune with 10 nominations and Belfast and West Side Story with seven each.
The 94th Annual Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on March 27.
