Oscar De La Hoya calls out Floyd Mayweather for rematch as boxing legend revives comeback plan after hospitalized with COVID

Oscar De La Hoya wants a rematch with Floyd Mayweather next year after being forced to put his return on hold.

The 48-year-old legend was scheduled to face Vitor Belfort in September, but withdrew after testing positive for COVID and ended up in hospital due to the virus.

But the American remains eager to return to the ring for the first time since his loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2008.

De La Hoya called in another of his former enemies, Mayweather, who beat him by split decision in 2007.

Mayweather, 44, is also retired – but has fought in a number of shows since hanging up his gloves in 2017.

De La Hoya told TMZ Sports: “Personally, at the moment I am not motivated because of COVID.

“I was actually in great shape and then COVID hit me, so my morale right now is a little low in terms of personal fighting in the ring.

“But in January I’m sure I’ll get back to work, start training again and mentally prepare myself first.

“But I want to go back, maybe Cinco De Mayo (May 5).

“Who knows, it could be Floyd Mayweather.

“This is probably the biggest fight you can do today.”
