WAYNE, ONÉ. — On Friday night, a plane crash near Wayne Airport resulted in the death of a pilot during the MayDay STOL drag races.
According to a Facebook post from event organizers, the crash happened around 6:45 p.m. and appears to have been caused by a “stall spin” that can cause an aircraft to take a steep, downward trajectory.
“In order to respect the privacy of their family, we are not releasing any details about their identity at this time,” the message from MayDay STOL Drag Races said. “Our deepest condolences go out to all of the friends and family of this driver that we personally spent time preparing for today’s events.”
The post went on to note that the remaining events for the races have been canceled and that the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the incident with the full cooperation of staff members.
