One dead, 5 injured in shooting near Atlanta shopping district

Authorities said one person was killed and at least five others injured when a dispute escalated into a shooting Saturday night near a popular shopping and entertainment district in Atlanta.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. local time on a street near the Atlantic train station, Atlanta Police Lt. Germain Dearlove said during a press briefing late Saturday night. Footage from the scene showed a heavy police presence with several surrounding roads blocked.

One male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Dearlove said, and five others were transported to nearby hospitals with unknown injuries. The six victims are said to be between 15 and 21 years old. No name was immediately provided.

Just before the shooting, Dearlove said, a “large group” of minors had been escorted off Atlantic Station property by security for “unruly behavior and also curfew violations.”

This group then gathered on the 17th Street Bridge where an “argument ensued, which escalated into gunfire”.

Dearlove said the exact circumstances of the shooting remain unclear. No arrests were made.

“It could be between two groups, one shooting at the other, so two possible shooters,” Dearlove said.

Atlantic Station is a bustling commercial area, with several shops and restaurants. It is located a few miles north of downtown Atlanta.
