On TikTok, it’s all fun and games until China wants your information

New reports in the United States have raised serious questions about whether the Chinese government has access to the personal data of American TikTok users. Yet Apple and Google, which run the two largest app stores, seem indifferent.

Leaked audio of TikTok internal meetings obtained by BuzzFeed contradicts the company’s sworn testimony to Congress last fall that US user data is handled by a “world-renowned US-based security team.” BuzzFeed reports that US staff were unable to access the data on their own and had to ask their Chinese colleagues where the user information went. Engineers based in China had access to nonpublic data from US users at least from September 2021 to January 2022, according to BuzzFeed.
