Omaha police officer pleads ‘no contest’ after incident with teenagers in Sarpy County

PAPILLION, Neb. (WOWT) – Omaha Police Officer Ja’Price Spears pleaded “without challenge” in Sarpy County Court Wednesday morning after being charged with disturbing the peace in April.

The Spears District Court case was dismissed and he pleaded “no challenge” to the class 3 “disturb the peace” charge.

Spears was charged with chasing down two teenagers in April after they knocked on his front door in the middle of the night. Agent Spears allegedly pointed a gun at them and was physically with one of them.

According to the Sarpy County District Attorney’s Office, Spears is accused of handcuffing and brutalizing the teens before calling the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office. Days later, the parents filed a complaint and Spears was investigated for his use of force.

Spears faced a maximum of three months in jail, a $ 500 fine and restitution, but his attorney requested unsupervised probation on Wednesday, noting that Spears, who was put on administrative leave, was still working.

The officer received a deferred judgment with nine months probation, but could be released sooner.

The judge ordered Spears to stay in Nebraska without further violation of the law, to keep his job, to abstain from drugs and alcohol, the judge ordered Wednesday. The officer is also required to pay $ 1,627.13 in restitution, reimbursing families who filed complaints for vehicle damage and medical bills; as well as a $ 50 fine, the judge said.

The officer was also ordered to undergo 25 counseling sessions with an advisor of the judge’s choice, noting that the number of sessions required could be reduced by Spears’ probation officer.

“I think you have issues with emotional regulation. And I believe it has to do with your work and your time abroad. And I want you to explore that in the council, ”the judge said.

If Spears did not qualify for the deferred trial, he could face 30 days in jail starting January 13.
