Oleksandr Zinchenko calls on Ukraine to produce ‘the best performance of our lives’ against Wales

Many in a Ukraine shirt against were playing their first competitive game of 2022, with Russia’s invasion of the country bringing domestic football to a halt, but the visitors were brilliant in a 3-1 win at Hampden Park to fend off a victory to earn their place in Qatar.

Ukraine will now travel to Cardiff on Sunday to take on Wales, where the winner will qualify for the World Cup later this year.

Against Scotland, Zinchenko produced a man-of-the-match performance but warned his team-mates that their efforts will count for nothing if they don’t finish the job against Wales.

“To be fair, obviously everyone knows the situation in Ukraine, and every game for us is like a last game,” Zinchenko told Sky Sports.

“But we dream as a team to be at the World Cup, and we have one more game, one more final, and we have to win it, we have to take it, otherwise this game will mean nothing.

“We played pretty well, apart from maybe 20 minutes in the second half. Scotland are a great team. They play an open game, not our style, but we did well, scoring three goals and we could have scored another.

“Wales are going to be a huge game for us. We have to show the best performances of our lives, and we will see what happens.
