Champion jockey Oisin Murphy could team up with Wonderful Tonight for the first time in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes if conditions are right for Ascot.
The David Menuisier team star was ridden by William Buick on his successful seasonal arc in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot and when she claimed the second of two Group 1 wins to date in the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes last fall.
However, Buick will be aboard Charlie Appleby’s Derby hero Adayar for successful owner Godolphin on Saturday, leaving Murphy to take the reins of Wonderful Tonight – if she lines up.
The ground at Ascot is currently good to firm, good in parts, with thunderstorms possible later in the week.
Carpenter said: “Oisin is a top level jockey, and we think he is the best possible replacement for William if she races.
“It’s one of those things – in the summer heat can be followed by thunderstorms, so it’s by no means an illusion to think we might have rain. We just want to have the options open.
“I’ll talk to Chris (Wright, owner) before the statements Thursday morning, and we’ll make a decision then. She’s a different horse this season – she’s stronger and she could handle better ground, although you can’t. guarantee that.
“What we don’t want to do is have a tough race on good ground at this point in the season and push it back.”
Wonderful Tonight is entered in both the Qatar Nassau Stakes at 10 stadiums and the Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes at 14 stadiums at Goodwood next week, so Carpenter has alternate entries.
He added: “If the pitch isn’t fair at Ascot and the forecast for next week at Goodwood is better, we’ll have to make a decision.
“I don’t feel as much pressure to run because there are other options next week, and I think I would favor the Lillie Langtry for her, if we were to go to Goodwood.”
