Initial investigation shows alcohol may have been a factor when Alexander Roy, 25, of McLean, pulled the trigger on a gun, believing it was unloaded, and fatally shot Hernandez, a colleague from the American Park Police.
An off-duty U.S. Park Police officer faces charges after fatally shooting another officer in McLean, Virginia, early Sunday, according to Fairfax County police.
After receiving a phone call reporting an “unintentional shooting,” officers responded to the 1700 block of Old Meadow Road. around 12:20 a.m., according to a police press release.
At the scene, police found the body of Jesse Brown Hernandez, 22, with a gunshot wound to the upper body.
Police say their investigation revealed alcohol may have been a factor in the death. Alexander Roy, 25, of McLean, allegedly believed the firearm was unloaded when he pulled the trigger and fatally shot Hernandez.
Three of the four people in the apartment at the time of the shooting were off-duty U.S. Park Police officers, including the shooter and the victim.
Roy has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and is being held without bail, according to police.
