Oakland spa worker shoots himself in the head, seriously injures worker

A shooting at an Oakland spa has left one employee seriously injured and another, the suspected shooter, dead, authorities said.

Officers responded to calls reporting an active shooter shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday, according to Oakland Police Department Constable Kim Armstead.

When authorities arrived, they found two people with gunshot wounds inside the business. They were described only as a woman from Berkeley and a man from Oakland.

Both were taken to a nearby hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead. The man remains in critical condition, officials said.

“The two people who were shot and injured were Kume Spa employees, a suspect and a victim,” Armstead said. “The suspect is deceased.”

Oakland Police spokeswoman Candace Keas said Wednesday the woman’s injuries were self-inflicted.

Calls to the company on Wednesday went unanswered, and a representative reached by email declined to comment.

In an email to guests, spa officials said they were “really sorry about what happened this morning at our Grand site,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The email said officials were shutting down the site until further notice to provide advice and support to those involved.

In 2021, eight people were killed in a series of shootings at three Atlanta-area spas.

Armstead said the shooting appears isolated and there is no threat to the community.

“We don’t believe this was a random act of violence,” she said, noting that authorities were investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
