Number of IS sympathizers in Israel revealed – media – RT World News

The country was recently hit by a series of terrorist attacks, in which eleven people were killed

Defense officials estimate that about 200 Israeli citizens of Arab descent identify with the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and that at least 20 of them are capable of carrying out an attack, according to the newspaper Ha’aretz local.

The Israeli military shared figures obtained through social media monitoring and other intelligence activities with Israeli politicians on Sunday, the outlet reported.

Six Israeli Arabs who identify with IS have already been placed under movement restrictions, with further orders to follow, defense officials reportedly said.

They revealed that a few dozen Israeli citizens traveled to Syria, Iraq and the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula to join the ranks of IS there. Several of them have already been killed in the fighting, while the rest are to be arrested as soon as they attempt to return to Israel, according to the report.

Defense officials have also called on the government to ban the Israeli public from uploading videos of the scene of terror incidents to social media, labeling such clips as pilots for copycat attacks, Haaretz said.

Israel and the occupied West Bank have seen a spike in violence in the past two weeks, with 11 people losing their lives in terror attacks.

On March 22, an IS sympathizer ran over a cyclist with his car, killing the man, then stabbed three people to death outside a shopping mall in Beersheba. A few days later, two Israeli police officers were shot dead in a shooting attack also claimed by IS.

Last week, a Palestinian man with no known connection to the group shot dead five people in a Tel Aviv suburb before being killed by police.

The country is apparently preparing for more incidents, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi reportedly told commanders on Sunday that the military should be ready to remain on heightened alert for the month next or more.

Israel’s Channel 13 news claimed that Kohavi even suggested a repeat of ‘Operation Guardian of the Walls’, referring to an exchange of fire between Israel and the Gaza-based armed group Hamas, and violent clashes in cities with Israeli and Arab populations in May 2021.
