Novak Djokovic wins first game since Australia expulsion

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Novak Djokovic won his first match of the year beating Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-3 to open the Dubai Championships on Monday.

Djokovic was unable to defend his Australian Open title last month as he was kicked out of the country for not being vaccinated.

The United Arab Emirates allowed him in and Djokovic cashed in a tournament he won five times.

Musetti took two sets from Djokovic at Roland Garros last year but, on a blustery night in Dubai, the Italian joker couldn’t convert sacks of break chances as he led 3-1 in the first set and 4-2 in the second.

“I have to be happy with my tennis, especially after not playing for two and a half, three months,” Djokovic said on the court. “Of course there were times when I played well, there were times when I made a few unforced errors in a row in an unusual way. But it’s normal to expect that ( in my) first game after a while.

He will then face Karen Khachanov or Alex de Minaur.

Andy Murray won his first match in Dubai since his title run in 2017. He beat Australian qualifier Christopher O’Connell 6-7(4), 6-3, 7-5 after nearly three hours.
