Nottingham Forest star Jesse Lingard reacts to ‘absurd’ criticism ahead of West Ham reunion

The England midfielder will meet former club West Ham on Sunday after rejecting the chance of returning to east London when David Moyes takes his side to the City Ground.

There was a sense of frustration over the length of the Lingard saga within West Ham and Lingard was criticized for joining a newly promoted side before a club entered their second consecutive season in European football.

While West Ham balked at the former Manchester United star’s wage demands, Lingard stressed he had more lucrative options this summer, playing down suggestions his move to Forest was solely based on finances.

“I could have gone abroad for much, much, much more money, like money that would change my life,” he told Sky Sports.

“So to me, it’s really nonsense. I don’t really like to read into that stuff, it was my decisions.

“The owners have been very strong in their approach to bringing me here. They took me to London, they went too far to do what they could to get me here.
