Not enough for Barcelona to finish second and we must demand more, claims Xavi Hernandez

Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez has hit out at the fans who were content with second place and instead admitted that it wasn’t enough for Barcelona to finish second and without a trophy. He also added that they will start planning for the summer soon and he knows what the club needs to compete again.

Despite a goalless draw against Getafe, the result confirmed Barcelona’s runners-up finish and ensured they will be playing Champions League football next season. Not only that, he marked a sensational comeback for the the league giants as they were in ninth place when Xavi was named. But the Spaniard has turned things around for the club by losing just three La Liga games since the Barcelona legend took charge.

However, even Xavi’s managerial skills have seen the club endure tough games, albeit with real Madrid still improving, many believe Barcelona need to do the same to be competitive. But there are more than a few fans who are delighted with second place, but Xavi disagrees and believes it’s ‘not enough for Barcelona’ to finish second and above all without a trophy. He added that the team must improve and next season they “must fight for the trophies”.

“It’s not enough for Barca [to finish second and trophyless] and we know that next season we will have to demand more. But the way things were going in November, [we would have] signed up for it. Now we have to evaluate things. We need to strengthen ourselves. Next season we have to fight for the trophies. We have to prepare well and be competitive,” Xavi said, ESPN reported.

The La Liga giants are in need of a serious overhaul, with Xavi planning to usher in a new era for the team, but given their financial troubles, it could prove more difficult than many think. However, the Barcelona boss has revealed they will start planning from this week and he admitted ‘I know what we need to compete’.

“This week we will start planning. We don’t have much time. We are against the clock to make decisions. I know what we need to compete. The club knows, [sporting director] Mateu Alemany knows and [sporting advisor] Jordi Cruyff knows [what I think]. What we can do depends on our financial situation. If it’s good, I’m optimistic that we will compete because next season we will have to fight for the trophies,” he added.
