North Central College athletics coach Frank Gramarosso retires after 39 years; ‘It’s time”

CHICAGO (SCS) — For the first time in nearly 60 years, North Central College has opened the search for a new men’s athletics coach.

The second of their dynamic duo retires, and what a ride it has been.

“I’m going to be 69 next week, that’s why now. The older coaches I talk to, they say you’ll know when it’s time, and it’s time,” head coach Frank Gramarosso said. to Matt Zahn of CBS 2.

So after 39 years at North Central College, Gramarosso calls it a career. Perhaps equally unbelievably, the man he replaced as head coach in 2010, Al Carius, is still around, still helping out on the Gramarosso staff.

“I’ve been here 57 years. Grammy’s been here 39 years,” Carius said. “My wife says Grammy and I have the wedding in college. We’ll disagree about different things, and we’ll debate, debate, debate. Every time we walk out of the room, we’re connected with the message that we give to the team.”

“We’ve been working together for so long and finishing each other’s words and sentences,” Gramarosso said. “It’s a trust, and it’s a love that has kept us together, going in the same direction.”

Few programs at any level can match the Cardinals’ success: 12 national championships, the last five with Gramarosso as head coach. But that’s not all about all banners.

“Winning a title? That’s not our goal, believe it or not. Our goal for athletes is to be the best person possible, the best teammate possible. When they leave the arena, be the best son , the best student. , the best friend. And winning is just a byproduct of that philosophy of doing things the right way,” Gramarosso said.

And those are the people Gramarosso will miss when he steps down at the end of the season.

ZAHN: “What will young people miss the most? »

GRAMAROSSO: “The athletes, I think. … That’s what we’re here for, to help them.”

Gramarosso said he wanted to help with the transition to a new coach and, of course, stay in touch with all of the student-athletes he’s influenced over the years.
