NJ Trash Fire Causes Evacuations; 1 wanted

A fire at a New Jersey trash can has caused homes to be evacuated and left one person missing, authorities said.

Elizabeth officials said the fire at Waste Management’s Julia Street Transfer Station was reported around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The city’s public information officer, Ruby Contreras, said surrounding homes were evacuated and no injuries were reported, but one person was not found.

Contreras said the fire may have been started by machinery at the site and was expected to “continue overnight”.

The fire was burning south of Newark Liberty International Airport, but airport operations were not affected, according to the airport’s Twitter account, NJ.com reported.

One person is still missing from the fire.
