One week before the regional elections in Venezuela, The dictator Nicolás Maduro attacked the delegation of the European Union (EU) again this Sunday, describing its members as “spies”, who were looking to “stain” the electoral process.

“The EU came as enemies and they did not find an element to leave the elections in Venezuela. An improvised report tried to stain the country’s electoral system (…) They were not international observers, they were walking around the country spying on the social and economic life in the country “, said the Chavista president, who in the last hours returned from his trip to Cuba.

Also, despite allegations of fraud, he maintained that “the opposition has done well”: “The opposition had its space, with a good harvest of governorships and a good harvest of mayors. For us it is good, the opposition has done well ”.

Along these lines, the Venezuelan dictator assured that last Sunday “there were fair and transparent elections,” in which “Chavismo swept away”: “The revolution remains undefeated, everything is the product of the efforts of our people.”

Last Tuesday, Isabel Santos, head of the European Union observer mission in Venezuela, presented her preliminary report on the regional elections on Sunday, in which the “lack of judicial independence and non-adherence to the rule of law” were found.

The Portuguese diplomat, who will return to the country in late January or early February – according to her – to present the full report, added that “The political campaign was marked by the extensive use of state resources.”

He stated that “there were no sanctions from the National Electoral Council (CNE) to the violations” and that the observers of the bloc “witnessed the establishment of checkpoints in the 23 states and the Capital District, despite their explicit prohibition by the CNE ”.

“We regret the murder of a voter who was standing in line to vote in Zulia. An attack in which other people were injured, “said the head of the EU mission, who also indicated that there were” attacks on an electoral observer (he clarified that he was not from the European Union) and two human rights defenders. ” “Acts like these have no place in a democratic process”, he assured.

“There was a lot of speculation about the nature of our mission. It is independent, neutral and impartial. The observation missions are not an instrument of interference in the life of the countries ”, he clarified; while he stressed that “the report is only preliminary. There are still critical stages, including the end of the scrutiny and resolutions of possible challenges that the European Union will continue to observe ”, he explained.

In that sense, one week before the elections on November 21, the National Electoral Council has not yet proclaimed a winner in the state of Barinas, the most valuable for the Chavista dictatorship.

In his first official bulletin last Sunday, the president of the CNE, Pedro Calzadillasaid that the brother of the late Hugo Chávez and candidate of the PSUV for the governor of Barinas, Argenis Chavez, had an advantage over the candidate of the Table of Democratic Unity (MUD), Freddy superlano, of only 673 votes, with 90.2% counted.

However, the next day, when offering a second bulletin, Calzadilla did not mention Barinas and to date it has not been announced which of the two is the governor-elect in the state.

Superlano and the entire opposition arch have been denouncing fraud, ensuring that the MUD candidate was the winner of the contest.

Last Friday, Superlano argued that officials related to the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro “know” that Chávez lost and that it is not an “invention”: “The same numbers that we handle are handled by you and today you have the opportunity to honor your investiture and functions for which you were trained.”

This Sunday, however, Diosdado Cabello threatened to challenge the electoral results in case the CNE, akin to the regime, announces a narrow victory for the opposition.

“We have lost mayoralties by five votes (…) Wherever it has to be challenged, it is challenged. Where we win by one vote we will defend it. We do not care what the whole world says, that we are not capable of delivering for one, “warned the vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), in an interview with the official journalist Ernesto Villegas.

“For us, Barinas is Chávez, it is our stronghold. That’s where Commander Chávez was born. In the last campaign the commander said from Sabaneta to Miraflores, and we started that epic. He has a spiritual reason for us ”, he added.

In line with Maduro’s statements, Cabello last week insulted the Mission of the European Union, calling observers “stupid” after the presentation of the preliminary report. In addition, he announced that the dictatorship will not allow the delegates to return to Venezuela next January: “These people believe that we are a colony. I already had the report done. Also they say they come in January. How is it that you think you can come to Venezuela when you feel like it? No, compadre, that is not so! “.
