Over the weekend, the Black Panther the star’s girlfriend, Lori Harvey, shared photos of an apparent launch party for a rum called J’Ouvert. “Congratulations on launching your baby rum !!! I’m so proud of you !!!” Lori captioned an Instagram Story photo of Michael at the rally, according to screenshots shared on social networks.

However, many took to social media to express their disappointment with the 34-year-old actor’s company name, including Nicki Minaj. Some have even accused the brand of cultural appropriation.

Traditionally, people have pointed out that J’Ouvert is a festival that celebrates Caribbean culture. As well as taking place every year in Trinidad, Tobago and Grenada during Carnival, it is also celebrated around the world.

On Instagram, Nicki, who is Trinidadian, reposted the historical significance of why J’Ouvert is being watched and called on Michael to consider changing the brand’s nickname.

“I’m sure MBJ did not intentionally do something he thought the people of the Caribbean would find offensive,” said the Queen the rapper captioned her post on Tuesday, June 22. “But now that you know about it, change the name and keep on thriving and prospering.”
