Niagara Falls: New York woman pulled from submerged car near rim has died, police say

The unnamed local woman in her 60s was pulled out of the car by a lifeguard suspended from a US Coast Guard helicopter about 50 yards from the US Falls, police said.

“We’ve never had a vehicle in the water this close to the edge,” New York State Park Police Captain Chris Rola said at a press conference.

The woman was the sole occupant of the car, which witnesses saw floating in the river, Rola said.

Investigators believe the vehicle entered the river between a pedestrian bridge and a vehicle bridge, but it is not known what circumstances led to the incident.

The coast guard was deployed after police failed to recover, Rola said. Drones were also used to determine if there were other occupants in the vehicle and to obtain license plate information, he said.
