NHL games on TNT today: TV schedule, Rangers vs. Capitals, Blackhawks vs. Avalanche schedules

The NHL begins its tenure on TNT with a double dip of action Wednesday night.

But, before the games start, TNT will host a pre-game studio show starting at 7pm with a panel that will include “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky. Anson Carter, Rick Tocchet and Paul Bissonette will also be on the set.

While there are certainly fireworks from the pre-game show, the first game of the night should be the equivalent of the show at the end of Macy’s July 4th show. Rangers vs. Capitals. Two teams who have a strong aversion to each other. Why? During their penultimate meeting, there was all of Tom Wilson who slammed Artemi Panarin. In their last meeting, with the Rangers closing in on home, there was an online brawl in the opening face-off and six fights in the first five minutes.

Since then, the Rangers have grown stronger – meaning Ryan Reaves, Barclay Goodrow, Sammy Blais – and have hired a new bench chief in Gerard Gallant.

On the other hand, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is questionable for the game due to a lower body injury. He skated in optional practice Tuesday. Washington will be without Nicklas Backstrom, who was placed on the long-term injured list after suffering a hip injury.

Game 2 of the night marks the debut of Marc-André Fleury and Seth Jones – and the return of Jonathan Toews – for the Blackhawks. Fleury and Jones were acquired as part of offseason offers and Toews missed everything in 2021 due to illness.

As the game marks the debut for the Chicago boys and the return of their captain, the Avalanche will be deprived of one of their best players. Nathan MacKinnon is absent due to a positive COVID-19 test. It is asymptomatic.
