NFL Insider Reveals Brock Purdy Injury Update

Recently, it seemed like the San Francisco 49ers were a developing Cinderella story, as injuries to first- and second-string quarterbacks Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo resulted in the promotion of rookie Brock Purdy.
As the team’s first-string QB starting in Week 13, Purdy played impressively, and it looked like he wasn’t just the team’s new franchise signalman, but perhaps- be on the verge of leading her to her sixth Super Bowl championship.
But Purdy injured his elbow in the Niners’ NFC Championship Game loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and today they found out the injury was very serious.
#49ers QB Brock Purdy suffered a complete UCL tear in his throwing elbow and will undergo surgery, the sources say.
Purdy gets a second opinion, but the initial hope is that he can undergo a repair — not a rebuild (AKA Tommy John) — and be ready for training camp. pic.twitter.com/dFGQGpPALw

If he just needs the ligament repaired, he may miss about six months, but undergoing Tommy John surgery would be a whole different story.
This is a procedure that baseball pitchers sometimes undergo, and they will often miss a year or two after such a procedure.
If Purdy has Tommy John surgery or is unavailable when training camp begins in July, it will be interesting to see what the 49ers do at QB.
Lance hasn’t played much organized football since his college days at North Dakota State University, but some still believe he has the potential to be at least a useful player.
Of course, there is always, at least in theory, the possibility of them bringing Garoppolo back once more to serve as a substitute and perhaps a starter under centre, although that would be expensive.
San Francisco is looking to give star defensive end Nick Bosa, a Defensive Player of the Year nominee, a contract extension, and retaining Garoppolo would likely complicate their efforts to do so.
