SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Wednesday dismissed parents’ concerns about California policies that prevent schools from notifying parents when their children indicate a desire to change gender.
The issue has sparked a major debate in California, with Newsom’s administration suing a local school district in Chino Valley, Riverside County, that adopted a parental notification policy in a recent school board vote to 4 to 1.
Newsom appeared in the spin room after the second debate of the Republican presidential primary at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. He disparaged the candidates on stage before answering a question from Breitbart News:
Breitbart News: Why shouldn’t parents know if their children are in school transition?
Newsom: That’s a hell of a thing – you’re talking about one percent of the population. Climate change, which will affect 100% of the population, hasn’t even been mentioned, and we’re talking about trans issues?
Breitbart News: Here in California, it’s a problem.
Another reporter: This is a big problem for parents.
Newsom: Is this a central question for America?
Breitbart News: Why shouldn’t parents know?
Newsom: That’s the big – that’s the big distraction. It’s one of the biggest distractions and it’s classic. One percent of the United States population. These children just want to live.
Breitbart News: Why can’t parents find out?
Newsom: Children just want to live. And we have a debate on trans issues? At the Reagan Library? You should be ashamed.
A recent Rasmussen poll showed that 84% of California voters support parental notification policies. The state says these policies endanger children’s rights by potentially exposing them to school bullying.
Earlier this month, Newsom claimed that parents concerned about the issue had been “stimulated” by Republicans.
