Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes heads the ball over the post from less than a yard after avoiding ‘the most egregious red card’

It was an eventful night for Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes, who avoided a red card and hit the post less than a yard from goal.

The Brazilian was in the thick of the action after just eight minutes when he launched into a challenge with Leicester midfielder Boubakary Soumare.

As well as missing the ball completely, the Newcastle star’s high boot caught the Foxes midfielder in the knee, leaving him writhing on the ground.

Despite appeals from the players and the Leicester bench, the referee made the decision to only award a yellow card for what was considered a reckless challenge.

With Leicester desperate for points, a red card for Guimaraes could have drastically changed the course of Leicester’s must-win game.

It certainly wasn’t lost on Leicester fans who were adamant that Newcastle should have played the remaining 82 minutes of the game with just ten men.

One supporter said: ‘How is this not a red challenge… terrible.’

Another said: ‘This is the most glaring red card’, while another added: ‘It’s as clear as you’ll ever see.’

Several other fans referenced the referees’ treatment of Casemiro, saying, “Casemiro turned red for less.

Another added: “If it’s Casemiro he’s suspended for a month and I’m not even exaggerating.”

Meanwhile, one Newcastle fan even admitted he should have been sent off, saying: “As a NUFC fan, yes. Very very poor challenge. I don’t know how he didn’t leave.

Many clearly think the 25-year-old was lucky but Guimaraes was certainly unlucky in the 71st minute as he wasted a golden chance to put the home side ahead.

Leicester defender Wout Faes’ flick unwittingly found an unmarked Guimaraes, but despite being virtually on the goal line, he only managed to hit the post with his head.
