Newcastle Knights squad, Kobe Rugless named, Australian junior boxing champion

A junior Australian boxing champion has been named to the Knights’ extended bench for this weekend’s trip to face the Cowboys.

Kobe Rugless, a 20-year-old who joined the club this summer from North Sydney during the NSW Cup, stood out in the lower classes and was called up to the main squad.

Although Rugless couldn’t make the last 17 at Townsville, his selection shows he’s part of coach Adam O’Brien’s long-term plans.

“I just feel right now and it’s great to be training with the team full time,” Rugless told Wide World of Sports during the offseason.

“Danny Buderus is one of the greatest prostitutes of all time, he gave me some advice and Andrew Johns is helping out too, so I couldn’t be happier.”

Rugless, whose father Troy played in the lower grades for the Roosters and South Sydney, as well as the top grade for the London Broncos, has an impressive boxing resume.

He won national titles in the under-15 and under-16 age groups and toured China with an Australian team.

“I love boxing but I had to choose between the two and the league is definitely my preference,” he said.
