Newborn stabbed to death by teenage mom in Colorado: police


An 18-year-old has been arrested and charged with stabbing her infant daughter, who was found dead this week in Colorado, the district attorney’s office said Friday.

The teenager, Leiyla Cepeda, faces two counts of first-degree murder, according to the Weld County prosecutor.

The death of a baby is considered a homicide

The affidavit, however, said an autopsy showed the child was born alive and a coroner found “a significant number of puncture wounds” on the child’s chest, rib cage and abdomen, depending on the TV channel. The coroner concluded that the infant’s manner of death was homicide.

In a news release Friday, the district attorney’s office said Cepeda was being held in a hospital. “A court date has not yet been set for Cepeda. No further information is available at this time,” the Weld County District Attorney wrote.

He noted that Cepeda was 17 at the time of the alleged crime (she turned 18 on Friday) and “was charged as an adult.”

The Associated Press reported that Cepeda is originally from Texas and was visiting family in Colorado at the time of the allegations.
