New Zealand took a relentless 19-17 victory over South Africa at Townsville on Saturday to secure the rugby championship title with one game remaining.

The 100th Test between rugby’s two most successful nations did not disappoint and it wasn’t until Jordie Barrett took his fourth penalty two minutes from time that the All Blacks took the lead for the last time.

Winger Will Jordan scored an early try and Barrett added 14 points off the tee to give New Zealand a 12th Southern Hemisphere Test Championship title and 10th consecutive Test victory.

South Africa, who suffered back-to-back defeats against Australia, improved but failed to create enough scoring opportunities to maintain their hopes of winning the tournament until the second leg of the next week on the Gold Coast.
