New York Magazine Washington Correspondent Olivia Nuzzi on Leave Over Alleged Sexting With RFK Jr.

Olivia Nuzzi, a Washington correspondent for New York magazine, has been placed on leave after allegedly having an affair with former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. while covering his campaign.

Nuzzi, without naming the 70-year-old Kennedy descendant, admitted in a statement Thursday night that earlier this year “the nature of certain communications between me and a former reporting subject became personal.”

The 31-year-old star political journalist insisted the relationship was not physical in nature.

Sources told the Post that Nuzzi and RFK Jr. — RFK’s son and John F. Kennedy’s nephew — allegedly texted while she was engaged and he was married.

Nuzzi wrote a profile of Kennedy that was published in November 2023 and sometime afterward the two began their alleged affair, STATUS reported, citing sources.

While writing this article, Nuzzi visited RFK Jr.’s sprawling home in Brentwood, California, and the two went hiking together in the Santa Monica Mountains.

“Mr. Kennedy met Olivia Nuzzi only once in his life for an interview she requested, which resulted in a damaging story,” a Kennedy spokesperson told the Post when asked about their alleged relationship.

After recently confessing all to the editors of New York magazine, Nuzzi was placed on leave.

She admitted “that she had a personal relationship with a former 2024 campaign subject while reporting on the campaign, a violation of the magazine’s standards regarding conflicts of interest and disclosures,” the publication said in a statement.

The reporter would have been barred from covering the presidential election if the magazine had known about the relationship, according to New York Magazine, which also did not identify Kennedy by name in its statement.

“An internal review of her published work found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias. She is currently on leave from the magazine, and the magazine is conducting a further third-party review,” the statement continued.

“We regret this violation of our readers’ trust.”

Kennedy was not used as a source while Nuzzi was covering the 2024 presidential race, a source told STATUS News, which first reported the relationship.

Another person familiar with the relationship said the couple reportedly became passionate about each other in the new year, according to the outlet.

In his statement, Nuzzi said the relationship “should have been disclosed to avoid the appearance of conflict. I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I disappointed, especially my colleagues in New York.”

Kennedy has been married to “Curb Your Enthusiasm” actress Cheryl Hines, his third wife, since 2014.

Nuzzi was engaged to journalist and Politico contributor Ryan Lizza in 2022, but the couple called off the wedding in recent weeks, sources told The Post.

Lizza was fired from The New Yorker in 2017, where he was a Washington correspondent, after being accused of “inappropriate sexual conduct” by a colleague. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Nuzzi shared a link to a 2015 New York Magazine article about the portrayal of female journalists on the silver screen as “slutty ambition freaks.”

“Why does Hollywood think female journalists sleep with their sources?” Nuzzi wrote on X.

Kennedy launched his presidential campaign on the Democratic ticket in April 2023 to challenge incumbent President Joe Biden.

He then ran as a third-party candidate, but after failing to gain serious national traction, he suspended his independent bid for the White House last month.

He then supported Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate.

Kennedy is no stranger to marital infidelity, and in a diary obtained by the Post in 2013, he called his “demons of lust” “his greatest flaw.”

He admitted in a sworn statement filed during divorce proceedings with his second wife, Mary Richardson, that he resorted to “numerous infidelities” throughout the marriage “to maintain his sanity.”

Richardson committed suicide in May 2012, before the divorce was finalized and while Kennedy was dating Hines, whom he would marry two years later.

Kennedy detailed his extramarital affairs in his diary, where he recorded romantic encounters with 37 women while married to Richardson.
