The doormen were suspended after the attack, pending the outcome of the investigation. The mid-morning assault took place amid attacks on Asians and Asian Americans, including shootings at a spa in the Atlanta area that killed eight people, including six Asian women. .
The NYPD has recorded 31 anti-Asian hate crimes in the city so far this year, up from zero at the same time last year.
Local union SEIU 32BJ identified the two dismissed employees as a doorman and janitor who were members of the union. President Kyle Bragg noted in a statement that the union is “made up of a majority of immigrants, black and brown workers.”
“Under their collective agreement, both employees have the right to lodge complaints. There is a contractual process to challenge layoffs.
