The ankle issue that plagued New Orleans Saints star Michael Thomas last season would delay the wide receiver’s debut in 2021.

NFL Network said on Friday that Thomas “could be on the sidelines for weeks” to start the season while still recovering from offseason surgery.

The recommended rehabilitation period after her June surgery to repair ligaments in her left ankle is four months, according to the report.

After setting an NFL record in a single season with 149 receptions for 1,725 yards leading the league in 2019, Thomas was injured in the 2020 opener and caught just 40 passes for 438 yards and no touchdowns in seven games.

He made two playoff games but failed to register a reception on all four of his targets in a 30-20 playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was the first game of his five-year career without a grip.

A three-time Pro Bowl and a two-time All-Pro selection, Thomas has 510 receptions for 5,950 yards and 32 scores in 70 games since the Saints drafted him in the second round in 2016.

Thomas, 28, signed a five-year, $ 96.3 million contract extension in 2019 and is expected to earn a base salary of $ 12.6 million with a cap of $ 18.8 million in 2021.

His absence would deal a serious blow to the offensive as the Saints move from the Drew Brees era. Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill and rookie Ian Book are quarterbacks heading into training camp next week.
