Tensions could further divide the Renew parliamentary faction at a time when it risks losing its kingmaker status, with polls suggesting right-wing parties will gain seats.
Hayer is campaigning against Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally, a party whose MPs will sit alongside Wilders’ lawmakers in the next European Parliament. Hayer described Wilders’ party as “the opposite of what we stand for” on values, the rule of law, climate and the EU.
The entry of the far right into Dutch government, a first for the traditionally liberal and progressive country, highlights the growth of the far right across the continent – and puts centrist parties in a difficult position.
It also comes weeks before an expected far-right surge in the June 6-9 European Parliament elections, in which the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and the radical Identity and Democracy (ID) groups are expected to win seats .
Are you no longer a threat?
THE The European Greens were quick to note this that the Dutch coalition agreement came just a week after Renew signed a public declaration with other parliamentary groups naming the far right as a “threat” to the EU.
“We will never cooperate or form a coalition with far-right and radical parties at any level,” Renew and other political groups promised on May 8.
