Neighbors ‘really, really nervous’ with 11 violent armed robberies in Lakeview, Lincoln Park in less than a week

CHICAGO (CBS) — There were four other violent robberies in the greater Lakeview area overnight, bringing the total to 11 in less than a week in Lakeview and nearby Lincoln Park.

This includes a disturbing incident early Friday in which Dakota Earley, 23, was shot and seriously injured on Wayne and Webster Avenues over a cell phone.

As CBS 2’s Tara Molina reported, the Lincoln Park community was scheduled to hold a meeting about their concerns Tuesday night. A large turnout is expected at the meeting due to continued crime in the area – so the meeting has been moved from the warehouse on Fullerton Ave to St. Josaphat School, 2245 N. Southport Ave ., to welcome the crowd.

Police tell us they believe some of the crime is related, but no one is in custody for any of the recent crimes.

“Really, really nervous,” said longtime Lakeview resident Greg Baird. “A lot of friends don’t go out like they used to.”

We’ve heard about that jittery, uneasy feeling from Lakeview to Lincoln Park, with at least 11 armed robberies in the past week.

A 52-year-old man was rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center just after 12:30 p.m. after being robbed at gunpoint in the 1500 block of West Waveland Avenue by two men who took off in a silver sedan.

About 15 minutes later, three people were walking down the sidewalk in the 600 block of West Cornelia Avenue when two men approached, robbed them at gunpoint, and took off in a darkened sedan.

Police are not saying whether they believe the two Lakeview crimes are connected as they continue their investigation. Police also did not say whether the crimes were linked to a robbery at 1:03 a.m. Monday in the 900 block of West Armitage Avenue in Lincoln Park, where police say two men were robbed at gunpoint of a gun by a group of four men traveling in a gray. Sports vehicle.

One of the victims, 26, fell to the ground and the thieves took her wallet and an unknown amount of cash at gunpoint. The other, 25, ran for safety.

These three armed robberies all came after the disturbing shooting that seriously injured Earley, which was caught on camera. Earley is still hospitalized after multiple surgeries.

“If detectives determine a link, they will update the community alert, which we will issue at that time,” police said in a statement.

Police said these armed robberies at the following times and places are also possibly related:

• Block 2900 of North Clark Street on Wednesday, May 4 at 10:45 p.m.

• Block 2600 of North Bosworth Avenue on Wednesday, May 4 at 10:50 p.m.

• Block 1100 of West Wellington Avenue on Wednesday, May 4 at 11 p.m.

• Block 3000 of avenue Racine Nord on Thursday, May 5 at 10 p.m.

Brian Comer is the president of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association – a group set to voice concerns about Chicago’s police surge at a meeting tonight.

“This is an opportunity for our neighborhood to really step up and start becoming very active partners with the police locally here in the 18th arrondissement,” Comer said.
